An introduction to the challenges of distributive equity in the English Premier League

Purpose This article provides a plain language commentary on the distributive equity structure of English Premier League (EPL) with aim introducing sport business practitioners to foundational challenge facing professional leagues as they grow financially market opportunities, namely financial inequality between clubs. Design/methodology/approach Introducing and discussing data from seasons 2009/10–2018/19, reveals that despite maintaining consistent distribution EPL prize fund over time, imbalance within league has grown throughout period. Findings The EPL's is exacerbated by growing imparity in acquisition sponsorship revenues, broadcasting revenues implications policies concerning fair play parachute payments, leading problematic differential talent win–wage relationship experienced top six teams remainder. Practical market-driven continuation its revenue allocation led broadening imbalance, favour clubs, which could paradoxically undermine security league. Sport should be familiar this fundamental for accompanies growth. Originality/value Whilst percentage difference bottom clubs appears minor, there significant variation across league, primarily due large increase income. compounded positive feedback via relative dominance receiving larger share allocated higher finishing teams.
